Grindelwald is in the Jungfrau area of the Bernese Oberland region in central Switzerland. This picturesque alpine village is located at the base of the notorious mountain trio: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It sits at an elevation of 3,392 feet. Grindelwald started out as a farming village dating back to 1146 and became one of Switzerland’s first tourist destinations after building its first hotel in 1818.
The Charming Village
The village is encircled by the mountains of Faulhorn, Schwarzhorn, Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, Lauteraarhorn, First, Agassizhorn, Fiescherhorn, Mönch, Eiger, Jungfrau, Lauberhorn, and Männliche. All of these peaks are either within or border the town. The first visitors were mostly Englishmen. They came to climb the alpine peaks around the valley. Today, this is still a popular spot for mountain climbers. Most visitors come to experience the magnificent beauty of the mountains surrounded by lush green pastures.
A Place for All Seasons
In the winter, Grindelwald boasts one of Switzerland’s largest and most popular ski resorts. In the summer it becomes a hiker’s paradise. Endless trails and cable cars whisk you up the mountains in no time. Grindelwald is also a hotspot for adventure activities such as paragliding, ziplines, cliff walk, via Ferratas, riding alpine coasters, mountain carts, and Trottibike scooters. These features make Grindelwald a favorite destination for those who love the mountains, adventure, and breathtaking scenery.
Sometimes Grindelwald gets a bit of a bad rap for being a little touristy. But, don’t let that scare you off! Grindelwald is still a small village and a perfect alternative for someone who doesn’t want to stay in a larger nearby city such as Interlaken. It provides access to a variety of activities, shops, and restaurants that you won’t find in the smaller villages. Grindelwald is a great base location for many adventurous excursions, fantastic hikes or just immersing yourself in the spectacular views in every direction.
