What is a 4-star hotel in Switzerland like?

A 4-star hotel in Switzerland offer first-class comfort. Furnishing and equipment are high quality and the overall appearance is consistent in form, color and materials. Hiking in the Alps provides a rare opportunity of rugged excursions without sacrificing comfort at the end of the day. 4-star hotels can be found in even remote Alpine villages.

Here’s what you need to know about 4-star hotels in Switzerland:

They won’t have 24-hour reception, but someone will always be able to help.

The reception is required to be open only 16 hours a day, but there is always someone available in case of emergency.

Luggage service on demand.

If you need help with your bags, let the front desk know and they’ll have someone bring them to your room.

There will be a breakfast buffet option in the morning.

No better way to start your day than with traditional Swiss cuisine—Muesli, aged Alpine cheese, fresh-baked bread, and homemade jam are all staples at a traditional Swiss breakfast.

There will be an elevator.

No need to lug your bags up several flights of stairs. Your 4-star hotel experience will include an elevator. The hotel may have 1 or 2 rooms (tower suite or honeymoon suite) that don’t have elevator access, so if you know you need an elevator, make sure you book a room on a floor that can be reached by an elevator.

Wi-Fi in rooms and lobby.

Every 4-star hotel in Switzerland is required to have Wi-Fi/Broadband available in each room as well as the lobby. The quality varies–more remote (or historic) hotels often have weaker signals, but it’s always enough to send a quick email to friends and family.

Air conditioning isn’t a given.

“Opening the window” is the most common form of air conditioning in the Alps. Many hotels are at high elevations meaning it may get warm in the room during the day, but in the evening, it cools down. There is always heating in the room if it gets too cold.

You’ll have a private (heated) bathroom with a shower and/or bathtub.

You won’t have to worry about waiting in line for WC. Your room will have its own private bathroom.

Additional amenities and more space.

The lobby will have a beverage service area, a daily newspaper, photocopy/scan service, and a public use computer. Your room will have comfortable seating options, slippers (on request), and a choice of pillows.
